Microsoft has presented the renewal of its laptops with the Surface Book 2. This equipment does not change too much in terms of the exterior, although the interior itself has received a boost of features. This equipment is rather convertible, since part of the connectivity and power of the equipment is integrated into the base.

There are models with 13.5-inch screen with resolution of 3000 × 2000 pixels, and 15-inch with resolution of 3240 × 2160 pixels. Both are tactile and have a static 1600: 1 contrast. The chassis of the equipment is aluminum, with a size of 312 × 232 × 23 mm for the first model and 343 × 251 × 23 mm for the second. As it happened with the first Surface Book, they will be premium equipment with a price more than premium, to the MacBook.

The processor options include a Core i5-7300U dual-core 3.5 GHz multithreaded, and a much more recent Core i7-865U four-core 4.2 GHz multithreaded. They are accompanied by at least 8 GB of 1866 MHz LPDDR3 memory, and between 256 GB and 1 TB of PCIe type SSD.

This time Microsoft has included, finally and after the criticism of its latest equipment, a type C USB connector, although it is limited to USB 3.0 connectivity instead of being Thunderbolt 3. An untapped opportunity for, as I say, the price that They have-that you'll see at the end. They also have two other USB 3.0 connectors, a 3.5 mm connector and the Surface connector to join the base-keyboard. Includes 802.11 ac wifi, Bluetooth 4.2 and SD card reader.

In the graphical section, the 13.5-inch model can be configured with a GTX 1050, and the 15-inch model with a GTX 1050 of 2 GB or GTX 1060 of 6 GB - it looks like it will be a Max-Q version with less consumption , although Microsoft has not indicated it-, that will be installed in the base-keyboard. The Core i5 processor includes an integrated Graphics HD 620, and the Core i7 a UHD Graphics 620, whose main difference lies in the playback of 4K content with HDCP 2.2. It has a 5 Mpx front camera and 8 Mpx rear camera.

The price of these equipment, very good in principle in terms of performance, part of the $ 1499 for a Core i5, 13.5-inch screen, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. If you want a GTX 1050 with a Core i7, at least 1999 dollars will be paid, while if you want the GTX 1060 will have to loosen 2499 dollars, which reaches 3299 dollars if you want with 16 GB of RAM and 1 TB storage. Reservations start on November 9, and they go on sale on November 16.

When we talk about accessories designed for use with games, we always do it with a mind focused on monitors or gaming computers. However there are a lot of minor peripherals that fight to conquer the gamers that are at home. One of the firms with experience in that regard is Logitech.

A firm known for the manufacture of PC peripherals such as keyboards, mice, mats and of course, headphones. And in this sense the firm has announced the launch of a new model of headphones, the Logitech Astro A20 Wireless.

Created by the brand Astro Gaming, now owned by Logitech, the Astro A20 Wireless are wireless headphones with a striking appearance especially for their angular shapes. Finishes in black tones with touches of color (depending on the chosen model), incorporate a folding microphone in the form of extension to the classic style in this type of headphones.

The Astro A20 Wireless integrates two 40-millimeter loudspeakers with neodymium magnets that offer an oscillating frequency between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. They offer a sensitivity of 100 dB and an impedance of 32 ohms with a range of up to nine meters with respect to the sound source thanks to the use of the 5.8 GHz band in connectivity.

And since they are wireless, autonomy is fundamental. According to Logitech, they include a 400 mAH battery that offers up to 15 hours of battery life. They also include support for Dolby Atmos sound and Windows Sonic Ready (XB1 / PC).

    Price and availability

The Logitech Astro A20 will reach the market in two variants. On the one hand a compatible model with Windows 10, PlayStation 4 and Mac OS and another compatible with Windows 10, Xbox One and Mac, the two variants for a price of 149.99 euros. In addition there are two special designs based on the Call of Duty franchise.

We knew because it had leaked that ZTE prepared for today a surprise and that's how it was. It is already official the new ZTE Axon M, a new member of the Axon range that represents the premium devices and with better characteristics of the Chinese manufacturer. But this new Axon M (multitasking) comes with a different and very innovative design.

ZTE presents the Axon M, a mobile with double screen but thanks to a folding design these two can be combined to form a larger screen and act as a tablet. It is important to emphasize that we do not speak of a flexible design, since the two panels are fixed and it is the device from a thin hinge which is bent to form the complete screen.

Data sheet of the ZTE Axon M

SCREEN: Dual 5.2 "LCD FullHD Gorilla Glass 5
    PROCESSOR: Snapdragon 821
    RAM: 4GB
    STORAGE: 64GB + microSD eMMC 5.1
    BATTERY: 3180mAh Quick Charge 3.0
    CAMERAS: Rear and front: 20MP, f / 1.8, PDAF, dualLEDflash, HDR, 4K video, 720p240fps
    DIMENSIONS AND WEIGHT: 150.8 x 71.6 x 12.1mm 230g
CONNECTIVITY: USB Type C, BT 4.2, LTE, VoLTE, 3.5mm jack
    VERSION: Android 7.1.2 Nougat
OTHERS: Double Dolby Atmos speaker, foldable design

Double screen that can become a bigger screen Double screen that can become a bigger screen

The main novelty of this ZTE Axon M is that double screen that together can act as if it were a tablet. They can also serve individually, one for example to show a video and the other to show menus. The idea is to enhance multitasking and also offer a large space to view content in a relatively tight size.

We have two LCD panels of 5.2 inches and 1080p resolution that in extended mode behave as if it were a 6.75-inch panel, similar to a lightweight tablet.

We have dual mode so that each screen shows a thing and we can drag by gestures, extended mode for the content to be reproduced in large, here it is recommended to support the device on a flat surface so that the two screens are aligned and finally mirror mode, so duplicate what is shown on one screen and another and that two people from different angles can see the same.

Beyond this we have a body built in aluminum, protected with Gorilla Glass 5 and Dolby Atmos sound. ZTE has always stood out for offering devices with excellent finishes and this Axon M continues in this line.

As usual, yes, we have a slightly heavier model than you would expect for a 5.2-inch, 212g and 12mm-thick mobile when the screen is fully bent. Some high figures for a smartphone but hard to reach for a tablet. A device that sits between two worlds and we will have to wait to try to determine if it has been a success.

Inside the ZTE Axon M we will not find the latest technology of 2017. It is a pity but we will have to settle for a Snapdragon 821 with 4GB of RAM. Eye, is not much less a device but remains at the level of the LG G6 that already at the beginning of the year was fair, although ahead of the ZTE Axon 7. Looking to the second half of the year the optimum would have been a Snapdragon 835, which on the other hand would increase the price significantly.

64GB of expandable storage via microSD are enough for most uses. And to endure all this trot we have a battery 3180mAh battery compatible with Quick Charge 3.0. We will also see if it is capable of holding a whole day moving the two screens.

20 megapixel camera that acts as rear and front.

Another advantage of this foldable design is the possibility that the built-in camera acts both as a back and a main one. We have a single 20 megapixel lens, with aperture f / 1.8 and possibility to record videos in 4K.

The ZTE Axon M comes with Android 7.1.2 Nougat (upgradable to Android Oreo soon) and the manufacturer has promised to work with developers to optimize applications that take advantage of the double screen. A trend that they believe will be maintained over the next few years and they have contributed to growth.

Versions and price of ZTE Axon M

The ZTE Axon M will be available in China, Europe, Japan with DoCoMo and in the USA through AT & T. At the moment we have no confirmation of the price or availability date. We do know that it will start selling in Asian markets in mid-November while Europe will arrive during the first quarter of 2018.

Undoubtedly an innovative smartphone, a new mobile category and a risky bet by ZTE, a device that has very good features and can be a solution to the problem of mobile space increasingly larger.

In recent years we have witnessed a change of trend in the smartphone sector: Users have gone from demanding cheaper, more functional, functional terminals to opting for larger models in which they can improve their experience when using social networks and, with increasing frequency, reproduce audiovisual content of all kinds. This has had a direct consequence and is the fact that in a very short time, the phablets have displaced the conventional devices in what number of units sold is concerned. And this does not end here, since in the short and medium term it is expected that the supports of more than 5.5 inches end up occupying all the leading role.

In this new context, it is not surprising that many manufacturers dare with slightly riskier formulas that in this case translate into the emergence of large models that sometimes make it difficult to find the border between these and the smaller tablets . But is it really necessary to produce models that even exceed 6.5 inches? How far can your utility go? Next, we will try to see what are the pros and cons of this family of terminals.

    More screen, more resources

The benefits of image and performance are closely linked and without a good RAM and a powerful processor, the diagonals of higher performance can be somewhat useless that drains quickly the resources available to the terminal. The resolution is another key, since, if we find a large screen that adds a ratio between it and the housing that is also high but that is not compensated with a proper sharpness, the experience when playing content (which has been placed as one of the most widespread uses) can be frustrating and therefore lead to failure. On the other hand, we must not forget that the battery consumption increases as we add more functions in this field.

    The price

Terminals dubbed "Max" by some companies are, apparently, adjusted for their cost. Chinese firms such as CoolPad have already tried to launch phablets of large dimensions at an affordable price. However, these devices still have some gaps in terms of processor or obtaining a better image quality. In consumer electronics, as in many other areas, higher benefits, higher price, and this means that in most cases, devices over 6 inches are more expensive. Do you think that bigger models can still be more competitive?

    Comfort, another key

If there was something that revolutionized the mobile telephony sector at the time, it was the possibility of saving the new devices that came to market in backpacks or pockets without having to worry about carrying heavy terminals. Ergonomics and design are also crucial when manufacturing new devices that meet the demands of an audience that, while on the one hand demand higher performance, on the other it also requires a reduction of parameters such as weight or thickness. Taking into account this paradox, could there be conflicts when we find models that despite being light and slender, can present difficulties when taking them with us if they have large screens?

    The course of the market

Although several consultants consider that in the coming years, the sale of phablets will increase, the truth is that a deceleration is also expected in the entire smartphone sector. As happened with conventional tablets in their day, and with convertibles today, we could be facing a bubble in which dozens of manufacturers would create larger models, which could immediately result in an excessive supply of terminals that, Although they can be partly absorbed by consumers, they are also at risk of falling into oblivion due to the appearance of a multitude of new models from other categories every year. Do you think that models over 6 inches could be reduced to certain groups of users or that they will be able to overcome all the obstacles derived from the behavior of the market itself?

As you can see, the larger phablets must also face a series of challenges that can determine their future in the short term. Do you think that these devices will end up merging with tablets? What do you think is its utility if we take into account the large catalog of conventional smartphones and smaller models? Do you prefer large terminals or do you opt for smaller models to manage social networks and many other content on a daily basis? Could we be facing the germ of a new format that could be consolidated in the future?

This week marked 25 years since the launch of Apple's first laptop, the PowerBook 170. Hence Apple has chosen today's date to launch its new MacBook Pro, 6.8 million times faster, in an event for the press specialized in its headquarters in Cupertino, California.

The expected update of Apple's line of laptops comes just a day after the announcement of the new Microsoft computers, both desktop computers and laptops. The new MacBook Pro is the thinnest and lightest yet. The presentation of 13 inches will be only 14.9 mm thick, will be 17% thinner than its predecessor, with a volume 23% lower and weigh just under 1.4 kg, which makes it almost half a kilo lighter.

The 15-inch, will have a thickness of 15.5 mm (2.5 mm less than the previous), will be 14% thinner, 20% smaller in volume and weigh only a little more than 1.8 kg.

In the new MacBook Pro, the trackpad (panel with which the cursor is guided) will be twice as large, thanks to the elimination of the function keys. But these are the least revolutionary changes of the computer keyboard: the inclusion of an OLED technology touch panel, which shows functions according to the software in use and even works to preview photos and video, is perhaps one of the most significant changes in this computer.

Called the Touch Bar, it registers the touch in multiple points and is completely adaptable to the needs of the user, who can configure what tools and functions are displayed in the bar according to the program used. Casey Newton, journalist of the specialized portal The Verge, defined the Touch Bar as the new "right click", for the functionalities that it grants and that facilitate the use of any software. Navigate your finger through galleries of thumbnails of photos or documents; of options and Photoshop tools (which, announced today, will have an update for Apple's operating system before the end of the year, like the Final Cut Pro video editing program), mix music and manage audio levels with two or more fingers on the bar; and even make payments virtually will be possible to do, more easily, thanks to the Touch Bar.

In addition, for the first time Apple has included TouchID technology, recognition through the user's fingerprint. How could it be otherwise, has been the power button designated for this function, usable to unlock the computer and make payments through Apple Pay, the app previously available only for iPhone and iPad and today comes to the MacBook Pro thanks to the new operating system Sierra (it is the first computers to have it).

In fact, it is not the only thing that the MacBook Pro has imported from its relatives iPhone and iPad: also Siri, the personal assistant of the mobile phone, has an active presence on the new computer, with an exclusively dedicated button on the keyboard. With a brightness and contrast ratio 67% higher, the screen of the new Mac can show 25% more colors than its predecessor. It has an Intel Core i7 quad-core processor and a Radeon Pro graphics processor with up to 4 GB of video RAM, 2.3 times faster, always compared to the previous MacBook Pro. Your solid state hard drive will come with capacity of up to 2TB, with a data transfer rate of up to 3.1 GB per second. While the speakers of the new computer will have twice as much power.

Phil Schiller, Apple's vice president of global marketing, explained during the launch event that MacBook Pro performance will now be 130% better for processing 3D graphics; 60% to process video games; and 57% better in video editing. Your battery will last up to 10 hours. The new Mac comes with up to four Thunderbolt ports for connecting USBs, HDMI or VGA cables and chargers. However, it does not have memory card readers. The new computer will come in three presentations: one of 13 '', with dual-core processor Intel i5, without Touch Bar and with 8GB of memory, from US $ 1,499; another similar, only with the Touch Bar, from US $ 1,799; and the 15 '', with Intel i7 quad-core processor and 16GB of RAM, from US $ 2,399. All are available to be purchased. The cheapest one is ready to be sent, while the other two will start being sent after two to three weeks. In the event there was no announcement about updates in the line of the MacBook Air, computer thinner than the Pro also produced by Apple.

Why is it important to have a high-performance computer kraken?

The supercomputers are in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Ecuador. Supracomputer, San Luis Gonzaga University of Ica Think of an ordinary car: for example, a sedan model either. Now think of a Formula 1 car. That's the relationship a desktop computer has, like the one you use at home or your office on a daily basis, with a supracomputer (or high-performance computer, HPC). While both are cars (or computers) it is the only thing they look like. Just like the Formula One cars, like the ones Hamilton or Vettel usually drive, they cost a lot and require personnel with expertise to manipulate them: they are good for highly specialized problems (you would not use a race car to go to the market, nor would you use a supercomputer to read your mail or check your Facebook wall).

Companies like Cray or IBM are the traditional signatures in developing these monsters, which work on some of the biggest problems in science and engineering: the origins of the universe or new medicines against cancer. We speak of special machines for the technology within them: only one of these could have 10,000 processors. For reasons like this, they are expensive: the top 100 cost more than 20 million dollars per unit. In Latin America, several countries have their own supercomputers. What they are for, where they are and what their potential are are questions that we must answer to get the most out of them.

    What is a supercomputer?

According to the IOSR Journal of Computer Engineering, "high performance computing (HPC) refers to the practice of accumulating computing power in a way that can perform much better than a typical desktop can do to solve major problems in science. , engineering or business. " A useful way to understand what high performance computers are, suggested by InsideHPC, is to think about what is inside them. Inside your daily computer you can find: processors, memory, disks, operating system. The supercomputer has all that, only much more of each. HPCs are really groups of computers (something like an octopus of many brains). Each individual computer configured in a small group has between one and four processors, and current processors typically have between two to four cores. People specialized in HPC often refer to individual computers within a group as nodes. If we talk about business, for example, four nodes could be enough for a small one, or 16 cores. A group size common in many businesses is between 16 and 64 nodes, or between 64 and 256 cores. The idea of putting individual nodes to work together is to solve a big problem that no other ordinary computer can solve. As people, the nodes need to communicate with each other so that group work makes sense. For this, of course, these are connected through networks.

    What is it for?

The  usefulness of HPCs (supercomputers) is multidiverse, applicable in several
areas. Quickly, we can find that in its early versions, from the 70's to date, it has been useful for weather forecasts and aerodynamic research (Cray-1). In areas such as probabilistic analysis and radiological protection (CDC Cyber).

Also, in the decryption by brute force (EFF DES Cracker). Others did so in
illustrative 3D simulations of nuclear tests under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (ASCI Q). More recently, it also allowed the realization of simulations of molecular dynamics (Tianhe-1A). One of the representative firms of this technology is the IBM, that with its supracomputer Blue Gene / P managed to simulate a number of artificial neurons equivalent to approximately 1% of the cerebral cortex, containing 1.6 billion neurons with approximately 9 trillion connections.

The same research was able to simulate a number of artificial neurons equivalent to a rat brain. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, uses supracomputers to process hundreds of millions of data (numerical, graphical) to make more accurate forecasts. The US Advanced Computing and Simulation Program it also uses supracomputers to maintain and simulate everything that could be done with the nuclear arsenal of the United States.

The (cold) war of the petaflops

In the war of supracomputers, China has taken things very seriously and already surpasses the United States (which was once a leader), leading for more than a handful of years the list of fastest computers in the world. An example of this is how the country has used one of these monsters to create the largest version of the digitally generated Universe. The Sunway TaihuLight, the most powerful supercomputer of these moments, simulated "the birth and expansion of the Universe" using 10 billion digital particles, something that Chinese experts have considered "a warm-up exercise". Today, he is working on building a supracomputer capable of making 1 trillion calculations per second and expects the first prototype to be completed this year. With this type of technology, it hopes to be the leading country in artificial intelligence by 2030.

The supercomputers are also in Europe (Belgium, Germany, France, Spain and others have them), as research centers and high-performance computing services serving the entire scientific community. Currently the Chinese Sunway is at the forefront of everything, with its 93 petaFLOPS (being 1 petaflops, with s in singular and plural, the capacity of a computer to perform 1015 operations and processing calculations in a second).

Supercomputers in the region In Mexico, supercomputers are used for years and have mainly educational and research centers. It is clear that they are not at the level of China or the United States, but they have theirs. Abacus, for example, acquired by the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav) in 2014, was one of the 150 fastest supercomputers that year, with its 8,904 cores, 1.2 Petabytes of storage and 40TB of RAM, being able to reach 400 teraflops. The same center also has Xiuhcoatl, or the fire snake, released in 2012 and with a processing of around 50 teraflops. On the other hand, Yoltla, or the hotbed of knowledge, was installed in 2014 on the campus of the Autonomous Metropolitan University, with peaks of up to 45 teraflops. The Autonomous University also played its part with Atócatl (2011) and Miztli (2013). Brazil is the other Latin American power in the possession of supercomputers, although with some problems. The fastest computer is Santos Dumont, which has three modules (each in the top 500 worldwide). Together these make 1.1 petaflops of performance, which in simple could be a million times faster than a common notebook. He researched protein chains to cure Alzheimer's disease, and he worked to carry out a genetic mapping of the Zika virus, but it had to be stopped because it consumed too much energy and it was not possible to solve it. It also has Cimatec Yemoja, the second in the country, with 400 teraflops; Grifo04, with 251.5 teraflops; Tupa, with 214 teraflops. They are employees used in the oil industry, in geophysics, pharmaceuticals, chemistry, among others. The supercomputer laboratory of the Benemérita Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP) stands out, which has a supercomputer with a maximum capacity of 200 teraflops, and a second equipment with 135 teraflops. All this technology is used in complex studies varied, from research on astrophysics to studies to know the damage caused by radiation to DNA molecules at very low energies, less than one electron-volt. In Colombia, the Industrial University of Santander (UIS) owns Guane-1, the EAFIT University has the Apolo supercomputer, while the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (Bios) has its supercomputer dedicated to biotechnology, capable of analyzing in single 15 minutes the genome of a bacterium, a task that could take about 20 days before.

Argentina has Tupac, designed to simulate hydraulic fracturing processes for the oil industry, meteorology and car manufacturing. Also highlights Mendieta, a supercomputer installed in the National University of Cordoba, with its 14.7 teraflops at the service of research in astronomy, engineering and medicine, Big Data, censuses, among others.

Ecuador, for its part, has a supercomputer of up to 350 teraflops in Yachay (planned university community). Chile has since 2015 with Leftraru, a supercomputer with a processing capacity of 50 teraflops belonging to the Center for Mathematical Modeling (CMM) of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Chile.

And it was also the moment of Peru: with the acquisition of the supracomputer by the National University of San Luis Gonzaga de Ica (UNICA), a Chinese transnational aims to deepen in areas such as meteorology, astrophysics, pharmaceuticals and agriculture to a new level . Also, in fields such as data mining. The Supracomputer is already working on the integration with the satellite SAT SAT, operated by the space agency Conida, in order to develop more accurate weather forecasts, as authorities of this alma mater told N + 1. in process the construction of the data center where the equipment will be installed on the campus.

    Keys

    supercomputers measured?

The most used criterion is the calculation capacity, which is measured in flops (floating point operations). An operation of addition, subtraction, multiplication or division equals one flop per second.

What is a teraflops and a petaflops?

If flops is a measure of calculation performance, then tera = 1012 and peta = 1015. If a supercomputer has a petaflops, for example, it means that it can perform 1,000,000,000,000,000 basic arithmetic operations per second.

In what areas can they be useful?

The list is long: predict the climate, look for patterns on climate changes, study the universe, simulate effects of a heart operation, a nuclear or earthquake test, simulate brain functions, genomic analysis, predict the effect of new drugs in the proteins, look for minerals or oil more accurately, study bigdata how to analyze the behavior of customers in business. What software do they use? When talking about software, there appears an old acquaintance that at the mobile and desktop level perhaps we already had forgotten with the predominance of Android or Windows: Linux. As for supercomputers, free software sweeps: in the last Top500 was installed in 498 systems.
