REVIEW ONEPLUS 5, THE FLAGSHIP KILLER

January 24, 2018

COMPLETE AND ATTRACTIVE

The OnePlus 5 has proved to be a tremendously powerful terminal, very elegant, with cameras that attract attention and outstanding autonomy. It is a phone that, for the price you have, is a more than recommended purchase for the most demanding.

Although the OnePlus 5 has been on the market for some time, when we were offered the opportunity to try it and write an analysis, we do not doubt it at any time. Because the OnePlus 5 is one of those phones that have that "something special" that makes you can’t stop using it, and that call your attention in a special way.

Today we bring you the review of OnePlus 5, so you can discover with us how a phone can compete against the top of the range of many companies, for a price between 200 and 300 euros less than theirs. OnePlus has done it again, has curled the curl, and has offered us a good device, nice and (for the features that it has) cheap. Let's meet him

Design

In design, OnePlus offers us a terminal with a screen with a very marked 2.5D finish. It has significant bevels that give a very pleasant sensation of continuity, and that facilitate the ergonomics of the device.

We are facing a terminal with a weight of 153 grams that feels very light, and that inevitably reminds us of the iPhone 7. Despite being the model that follows the OnePlus 3 / 3T, the truth is that the change in design is more that appreciable, being a phone much more rounded and with better finish. Of course, it is still not resistant to water, which is a feature that we would have liked to find.

The OnePlus 5 has a finish with curved edges very elegant, with a 2.5D screen that gives a great sense of continuity

The side edges of the screen are very thin, and black interior frame is not appreciated, so the surface that you seem to observe from the screen is what you really have. It also draws attention to its thickness, which, if we compare it with a OnePlus 3 / 3T, it is noticeably thinner, partly also due to the bevel of the edges.

If we analyze part by part of the device, we find on the front in the upper area the headset, the front camera, the sensors, and the home button / fingerprint reader at the bottom, accompanied by the capacitive buttons: two subtle luminous points. You have to say about these buttons that actually their surface is greater than the luminous point, so do not worry, you will not have to have the precision of a surgeon to touch them.

On the lower edge we have the speaker, the USB Type-C connector, microphone and 3.5mm jack.

The right side, meanwhile, has the power button, and the slot for two nanoSIM cards.

On the left edge we find the volume control buttons, accompanied by the already known slider to change the modes of the device (silence, do not disturb and normal).

Finally, the back of the OnePlus 5 shows the double camera, the flash, and another noise canceling microphone. Unlike its predecessors, in this case the rear camera (chambers) is no longer in the central position. It protrudes slightly from the body of the device, so be careful when leaning on the table to avoid damaging them in any way.

Screen

¡Ahhh!, the OnePlus 5 screen, hated by some, loved by many. What is our opinion? Well, we have a very good screen that, without being exceptional, is more than enough so that we do not miss anything else.

Some people have criticized that it has a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels in a size of 5.5 inches. If you usually read our reviews you will know that, normally, we say that this does not seem like a problem. A FullHD resolution for a size of 5.5 inches leaves a density of about 400 dpi, allowing you to see clear, sharp and well-defined images. In addition, by not going to higher resolutions, the performance of the processor is optimized, and with it the autonomy of the battery.

“The phone has a FullHD screen, something that for some is too fair. For us it is a correct choice that offers better performance, autonomy and price”

In summary, we think it is a very wise decision from our point of view. Of course, if we have higher resolution screens, the definition will be even higher, but this will lead in most cases to a worse performance, a lower autonomy, or a higher price. You have to choose.

The brightness of the OnePlus 5 screen is remarkable, and you will not have problems to see it outdoors even at medium values. If you use it with the maximum brightness, you will get a nice facial tan. Regarding colors and contrast, it is a good screen, with a good calibration of colors, less saturated than in other phones of the competition ... As always; this is a matter of taste.

The finish of the screen is 2.5D, and has very rounded edges. The aspect that this offers to the set is outstanding, and even at the time of using it, that detail is appreciated for the ergonomics of the device.

In addition, we can say that, during the two weeks that we have been able to test the terminal, we have done it without any case or screen protector, and neither the screen nor the back show the slightest touch, use mark or flaw . We are therefore faced with a really tough construction, with Corning Corilla Glass 5 cover glass for the screen.

To finish, we could not stop talking about the famous jelly or jelly effect. There are blogs that will tell you that they have noticed, and others that do not. In our unit we have been able to notice it on some occasion, but it is not always noticed, nor does everyone really appreciate the effect, even if you notice it becomes something worrying or bothers you.

There is a lot of sensationalism about it, but the truth is that while you are scrolling at full speed through your Twitter feed or through a web, you are not reading what is shown on the screen (at that speed it would be impossible), therefore, although This effect, the truth is that you will give quite the same. The rest of the user experiences will more than make up for any inconvenience.

Performance

In the performance section, we can only say good things about this terminal. The OnePlus 5 is what it is: a real beast in features, which are also well used and give their best.

At the level of moving applications, demanding games with 3D graphics, multitasking ... you will not have the slightest problem at all. While it is true that, depending on what phone you have, you may be worth the change or not in this regard. Many have asked us if, having a OnePlus 3 or 3T, it is worth the change. Our opinion is that, if you do it just for performance, probably not. But if you consider the rest of the features, it's another story.

In our case, we are analyzing the OnePlus 5 with 8 GB of internal memory and 128 GB of storage. With this team we have achieved an AnTuTu result of, nothing more and nothing less than 168.254 points. There is little to add to that. Basically today it is difficult to think of something that this phone cannot move with an excellent ease.

On the rest of the sections of the device, its performance is also very positive. For example, we were very surprised by his speaker, both for the clarity of the sound and for its nuances and, above all, for the volume it is capable of delivering (really high).

In the section of battery, the union of the Snapdragon 835 and the efficient management of its 8 cores, with the use of a screen with FullHD resolution, make this device can arrive at the end of the day with 45% of available battery. We really have been surprised by their autonomy, which compared with the OnePlus 3 and 3T is an improvement in this regard.

“The autonomy of the OnePlus 5 has surprised us. It will allow you to reach the end of the day with practically half the battery available.”

Also noteworthy is the excellent operation of the fingerprint reader, fast, reliable, practically instantaneous, and located on the front (which on a personal level is something we prefer).

In short, we are facing a terminal that has features that more than meet the needs of anyone, both in power and storage (in the case of 128 GB, which seem more than enough unless you want to carry a collection of 100 movies on the phone). It is a careful device, balanced in all its aspects, and with a brilliant performance in any task, both in terms of performance and video, audio, interaction ... You can’t ask for more.

Cameras

The OnePlus 5 has a 16 megapixel front camera with f / 2.0 apertures, and two rear cameras: a 16 megapixel camera with aperture f / 1.7, and a 20 megapixel camera with aperture f / 2.6. All of them have Sony IMX sensors. In addition, the rear cameras are accompanied by a dual flash, how could it be otherwise?

If we go into detail about its dual rear camera, we see that it allows us to record video at 4K, at 1080p at 60 FPS or 30 FPS, and even at 720p at 120 FPS. It also allows an "almost-optical" zoom x2 that offers a really good result (it reminds us in that sense to Honor 9).

If we focus on the rear cameras, it highlights the speed and precision with which it focuses the images, even in situations of less luminosity, and the good colors that it reflects. Partly also for not having a screen too saturated, the colors captured resemble reality more than in other cases.

The camera has different modes, but we find the "pro mode" options very interesting, which allow us to take a picture manually adjusting the ISO, white balance, aperture, shutter speed ... The screen shows a histogram and an artificial horizon as aids when it comes to taking the best possible photograph.

We liked the good functioning of the portrait mode, which manages to blur the background much more to highlight the subject in the foreground. The results in these types of modes are usually not as good as we might expect; However, in the case of OnePlus 5, we have managed to take really attractive pictures with this mode, without needing to take too long to focus, place the subject ... It is quite fast when locating the foreground and the background, for what the photographs we do will be more natural, and we will not lose the moment even if the subject is not posing for us.

In low light conditions also highlights the good result of the cameras, which hardly introduce noise even with higher ISO values. Actually, we are facing a group of top-level cameras, which has little or nothing to envy the competition, and which will delight those who trust their smartphone when taking pictures every day.

The front camera has also offered very good results, clear images, well defined, focused, and more than enough opening for selfies and group photos. It does not have a frontal flash, but it is not an excessively valued extra either

Summary

The OnePlus 5 is, basically, everything one could wish for in a mobile. An elegant, careful, well-constructed, ergonomic and attractive design. A performance out of the ordinary. Very good autonomy Some cameras of an excellent quality and very interesting ways. And a price that, for everything it offers, is not bad at all.

You can get a OnePlus 5 with 64GB of storage and 6GB of RAM for an approximate price of € 508.98 on Amazon. You also have available the 128GB version of storage and 8GB of RAM for € 618.37, also on Amazon.

It is undoubtedly a very interesting price for a high-end terminal that can give you years of outstanding performance and with which you will not miss any option in the palm of your hand.
